Uterine fibroid embolization is a minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids. It is a safe and effective alternative to hysterectomy for the majority of women.
Uterine fibroid embolization is performed by interventional radiologists, who are physicians specially trained in minimally invasive procedures. A small catheter is inserted into the femoral artery in the groin and threaded through the blood vessels to the uterus. Once the catheter is in place, the interventional radiologist uses x-ray guidance to carefully insert a small coil or particles into the blood vessels that supply the fibroid. These particles block the blood flow to the fibroid, causing it to shrink.
The procedure is performed under conscious sedation, which means that you will be awake but will not feel any pain. The sedation is administered through an IV in your arm. The entire procedure takes about an hour.
Most women experience significant symptomatic relief within a few weeks after the procedure. The fibroid continues to shrink over the next few months. It is a permanent treatment, and fibroids will not grow back after the procedure.
If you are experiencing heavy bleeding, pain, or pressure due to uterine fibroids, UFE may be the right treatment for you.
