Bleeding from any site or any organ in the body is a situation difficult to manage.
Bleeding from the intestine may be seen in patients with long standing gastritis or ulcer disease. Patients with liver diseases may suffer this as a complication of the liver disease. Currently a large number of patients are on anti-platelet treatment as a part of the management of heart diseases. This also makes them prone to bleeding episodes.
The initial step to identify the bleeding site will be a ct angiogram. Once the site is detected, a small bleeder vessel can be approached with a very thin- fine catheter and blocked to stop the bleeding. Utmost care is taken to preserve the blood supply for the rest of the bowel.
Intestine being highly vascular structure there is good collateralization of the vasculature. Considering these facts these patients have chances of re-bleed. And if treated aggressively may lead to bowel gangrene and surgery. The embolization of the bowel vessels needs to be done skill-fully to avoid these complications.
