Bleeding from any site or any organ in the body is a situation difficult to manage.
Patients who have past history of tuberculosis or lung diseases may experience bleeding in their sputum. If the amount of bleeding is high, say more than 200-300cc, its an emergency and needs urgent management. Such a heavy bleeding may lead to drop in blood pressure and may be life threatening.
Surgical option to control the bleeding is always secondary as there is high morbidity and mortality.
With the newer innovative technology and hardware, these life treating situations can be managed through a small pin hole in the artery. This makes it minimally invasive and relatively safe for the patients.
In case of bleeding in the sputum its a blood vessel going to the lung- bronchial artery needs to be addressed and embolised. The procedure is reserved only for life saving conditions as it has small possibility of paraplegia - weakness of both legs , as a complication. Though the chances of this complication is very less, one should be aware about this before opting for this treatment option.
