Diabetic foot leads to Micro Angiopathy. This causes narrowing of the small blood vessels of the foot. Along with this diabetes also causes peripheral neuropathy, diminished sensations of the foot. Both these factors makes the diabetic patients more prone for leg ulcers.

Therefore adequate foot care is essential part of the diabetic care to avoid leg ulcers & limb loss.

Inspire of adequate foot care diabetic patients may come across foot injury which may lead to non healing ulcer.

These ulcers need aggressive management on three heads

  • Infection control- this is achieved with good antibiotic.
  • Adequate care of the wound with dressing.
  • Insure adequate blood flow to the limb for healing of the wound.

Adequate blood flow to the diseased wound is achieved with angioplasty/ stenting of the blood vessels of the thigh, leg or foot. This is done by interventional Radiologist. These procedures enhance blood flow to the diseased leg and ensures faster healing of the wound. In terminal cases these procedures will help to lower the level of amputation.
